Methodology
For our best mouthwashes of 2024 ranking, the Forbes Health editorial team received recommendations from a panel of dentists who are members of the Forbes Health Advisory Board. Star ratings were determined by the editorial staff and are based on considerations such as cost, if the mouthwash contains fluoride and if it contains alcohol.
What Is the Purpose of Mouthwash?
Mouthwash is often seen as a helpful addition to tooth brushing, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). While it can’t—and shouldn’t—replace daily brushing, mouthwash may be able to reach areas in the mouth that are not, “easily accessed by a toothbrush,” according to the organization.
There are two main types of mouthwashes: Cosmetic and therapeutic. According to the ADA, there are distinct differences between the two:
- Cosmetic mouthwashes: Temporarily help ease bad breath, but do not include ingredients that work to kill bacteria that cause bad breath in the first place. Cosmetic mouthwashes also do not have ingredients that work to protect teeth or gums from infection.
- Therapeutic mouthwashes: These mouthwashes include ingredients like fluoride and cetylpyridinium chloride, as well as other ingredients designed to, “help control or reduce conditions like bad breath, gingivitis, plaque and tooth decay,” states the ADA.
Radiate Your Brightest Smile
SNOW's all-new award winning Whitening Mouthwash is made with all-natural ingredients, including aloe and mint to soothe, freshen, and tackle stains. Rinse morning and night for your freshest smile yet.
Should I Rinse After Mouthwash?
Rinsing your mouth with water or mouthwash directly after brushing can actually do more harm than good, according to the Oral Health Foundation. This is because whether it’s with water or mouthwash, rinsing right after brushing can strip your teeth of the beneficial fluoride in your toothpaste.
If you want to use mouthwash, the Oral Health Foundation recommends spacing it out from the time you brushed your teeth.
Which Mouthwashes Do Dentists Recommend?
If you are interested in finding the best mouthwash for your personal health history, it’s always best to talk with your dentist. They can help you make an informed decision, especially if you are living with specific conditions, such as bleeding gums or dry mouth, or if you have a high risk of developing cavities.
Put Your Best Smile Forward
In just 21 days, 9 minutes a day SNOW delivers brilliantly white smiles for even the most sensitive teeth. See improvement in as little as 3 days and erase smoking, coffee, soda and wine stains.
