Bevin Millington Parkins - March 20, 1946 - April 02, 2022

Departed: 04/02/2022 (Orange Park)

Obituary Preview: Bevin Millington Parkins, 76, of Orlando, FL, passed away on April 2, 2022. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica on March 20, 1946. Bevin was the first born to his late parents Noel Edgar Parkins and Cora Mae Evans Parkins. The family moved from Kingston to Manchester, Jamaica during Bevin’s youth. As a child, Bevin took an interest in learning. He enjoyed literature and reading the most. Bevin loved geography, but he found math to be his biggest challenge!

As the oldest, Bevin was given more responsibility around the house. Whether that meant going to buy groceries, cooking, watching and caring for the younger kids, or helping his dad paint the house—Bevin gave it his all and learned the value of hard work. He also found some time to play and loved the game of cricket. He adored his beautiful mom, who was an intelligent woman who taught him important lessons about family and life.

Bevin admired his father. He was his hero. His father was a British Caribbean Army member who served during World War II. Bevin looked up to his dad and wanted to follow in his footsteps. So, he joined the Jamaican Defense Force in 1964. Bevin was proud to serve his country. This gave him an opportunity to explore more of Jamaica. One of Bevin’s best memories serving was training in the beautiful mountains, but he had a big scare when he almost fell off the mountain. That’s when a fellow soldier, Vivian Martin, saved him from falling off the cliff.

The biggest anchor in Bevin’s life was his strong Catholic faith. The church was always there for him in good and bad times throughout his life. Bevin said his Hail Mary prayers every day. His favorite prayer was Our Father and Psalm 1. Attending mass at the National Shrine in Washington D.C. was an inspiring moment. It was an uplifting experience to hear all of the voices in unison and a beautiful sermon.

In the 1970s, Bevin visited his brother Gresford Parkins in New York. Having family in the United States, Bevin made the decision to migrate from Jamaica to America and pursue his dreams. It was in Florida that he met his first wife Susan Lee Parkins and started a family. And Bevin pursued his professional interests in quality management, gemology, sales, and writing.

To those who knew him best, Bevin was the type of person you’d find easily striking up a conversation with a stranger, helping someone in need, or sharing knowledge with a friend trying to solve a problem. To his sisters and brothers at home, he was a caring big brother who knew the rules and made sure everyone listened.

Bevin was most proud of his family and cared about them deeply. He was thankful for the parents he was given. And the family he created, including all of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children; Keino Parkins, Kembala Evans (Samuel Evans, III), Anika Parkins, three children whom he shared with former spouse, Susan Lee Parkins and Bevin Parkins, II, whom he shared with former spouse, Brenda Fisher. His grandchildren; Yasmine Turner, Tiara Parkins, Aaliyah Evans, Nguame Malyo, Nkosi Malyo, Mario Malyo, Kiara Evans, Mariah Parkins, Maura Parkins, McKenzie Parkins, and Manuel Malyo. And his only great-grandchild, Jaydian Jackson.

He is also survived by his brothers and sisters; Sheila Parkins Smith, Headley Parkins, Lincoln Parkins, Gresford Parkins, Patricia Parkins, Courtney Parkins, Rosie James, Lennox Parkins, Peter Parkin, and Steve Parkin. And his former spouses; Susan Parkins and Brenda Fisher.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Noel Parkins and Cora Mae Evans Parkins and his siblings; Franklin Parkins, Vindeck Parkins, Rudolph Parkins, Roy Parkins, and Monica Parkins.

A visitation will be held for Mr. Parkins Friday, April 8, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, FL 32073.

A funeral mass for Mr. Parkinswill be held Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Catherine's Catholic Church,1649 Kingsley Ave, Orange Park, FL 32073. Heather B. Tyrie - October 20, 1970 - March 31, 2022

Departed: 03/31/2022 (Orange Park)

Obituary Preview: Heather B. Tyrie

The world lost a beloved mother, daughter, sister and friend, Heather Burnett Tyrie, March 31, 2022. Born on October 20, 1970, to loving parents, Bruce Burnett and Susan Denison, Heather was the first of many siblings. From that day forward, sunrise to sunset, Heather lived each day to the fullest. She had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh. She made friends everywhere, she had an immensely caring heart.

First and foremost, Heather was a dedicated mother. She is survived by her two children, Kingston (age 13) and Lordyn (age 11), who made up the entirety of her world. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. With them she shared her love of the sunshine and water. Just as the ocean has no end, so does her love for her most precious blessings.

Heather was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord with all her heart. She shared the love of Christ with others through Bible studies, sharing her story, and mentorships. Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord, giving thanks to God the Father.” She did just that as her devotion was apparent in the many lives she touched throughout her life.

She was a strong, practical, and spiritual woman who loved with a passion that could not be measured. Heather’s fire for life has impacted many who are now at peace knowing she is in the arms of her eternal father.

Louis Paul Hartley - December 08, 1953 - March 31, 2022

Departed: 03/31/2022 (Orange Park)

Obituary Preview: Louis Paul Hartley passed away on March 31, 2022 in Fleming Island, FL. He was born on December 8, 1953 and at age 9 was adopted, along with his siblings Freddy and Janice, by Robert and Elizabeth Hartley.

The brave Hartley family adopted three children whom had been living in foster homes most of their lives and moved them to their new home in New Orleans, LA. This is where Louis’s love of fishing, boxing and football began. While Louis was in high school, the family relocated to Memphis, TN. There he met and married his high school sweetheart, Jan, to whom he would have been married 50 years this upcoming June. The couple then moved just outside of Memphis to Jonesboro AR with their first son, Bobby, and five years later Jason was born. In 1982, Louis committed his life to the Lord and became a soldier for God with his warrior mentality. He was an exceptional building contractor and developer. From residential neighborhoods, to churches, gymnasiums and large fitness facilities, his attention to detail and overall understanding of construction was second to none. Louis’s building projects still stand today in TN, AR, TX and FL. The architect Sir Christopher Wren, who built over fifty churches in London, most notably St. Paul’s Cathedral was quoted saying, “If you seek his monument, just look around you.” Also while in Jonesboro, he and Jan opened Jonesboro Gymnastics and together coached hundreds of children to advanced levels. Many of those students have gone on to be doctors, lawyers, surgeons, coaches and even the 1990 “Miss America.” He was especially proud of his competitive team, “Pieces of Eight.”

In 1986, the family moved to Jacksonville, FL to pursue various endeavors in the construction and sign business. Of course, his passion for fishing continued in the St. John’s River, Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and southern LA. His infamous offshore boat named “Fish Tales” had a highly illustrated career with his brilliant fishing mind at the helm. His secret mastery of jig fishing resulted in a limited out-boat full of fish on most trips. The local charter captains were puzzled at this amateur fisherman out-catching them by ten times. His knowledge of the oil rigs and his ability to follow the smallest of signs to locate fish were incredible. If you were fortunate to have fished under his direction, you were watching a true master at work. It should also be mentioned that if you were dumb enough to join his offshore fishing trip and got seasick, just consider your entire 12-hour day a deep cleansing. He would offer some great words of encouragement like “put on a skirt and get to the back of the boat Nancy.” Then he would add that chumming is good for fishing.

Louis coached both sons from a very young age through high school. His final ten years of coaching were at Trinity Christian Academy. His offensive and defensive strategy, film study, preparation and play calling is likely still used there today. He took great pride in preparing his athletes to mentally compete the toughest opponents. Many of those players played at the next level and several went on to the Pros. His brilliant play-calling and discernment led to countless particular game changing moments etched in time. He taught each to have the warrior attitude every time they went to battle. Louis’s pre-game pep talks stuck with those players throughout life. The following are in their words: faith over fear, play like you got a pair, whoever believes the longest wins, go punish them, never play on your heels, attack, dominate, believe that my bad is badder than your bad, we are going to smash them in the mouth for four quarters on both sides of the ball, get out there and kick their asses! His aggressive form of motivating will echo through eternity. Louis used his warrior spirit throughout his life to protect and provide for his family. He was a friend and father to many young athletes, many of whom are here today. Though he loved being called “Coach” and “Captain”, the name he was most proud of came from his grandchildren who called him “Poppa.”

The legacy and spirit of Louis Hartley will live on within everyone he touched and everyone they will touch in the future. He was a son, a husband, a father, a brother, a grandfather, a brother-in-law, an uncle, a builder, a fisherman, a coach, a warrior, and most of all a believer to the end.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Elizabeth Hartley and his siblings, David and Janice.

Louis is survived by his loving wife, Jan Hartley; children, Bobby and Jason Hartley; grandchildren, Caden Hartley and Darin Glover and daughter-in-law, Malia Hartley.

Debra Eubanks-Shinholser Benninghoff - December 01, 1958 - March 26, 2022

Departed: 03/26/2022 (Orange Park)

Obituary Preview: Debra Eubanks-Shinholser Benninghoff, loving wife and mother, passed to eternity surrounded by her closest loved ones on Saturday, March 26, 2022, in her lifelong home of Jacksonville, FL. She was 63 years old when she succumbed to an aggressive cancer, for which she received a diagnosis only nine weeks prior.

Debbie was a tremendously strong woman. Married early to her high school sweetheart, Ray,only to be suddenly widowed at 30, she pulled her life together to provide for and raise her young children. She worked her way through college and obtained abachelor’sdegree in Elementary Education from the University of North Florida, became a teacher (from which she recently retired), and went on toearnamaster’sdegree in Education. In 1990, Debbie fell in love with her second husband, Rick Benninghoff, to whom she had fortuitously been introduced by her first husband, Ray, shortly before he passed away. Debbie frequently reminisced about that day. When they left their lunch meeting with Rick, Ray very pointedly and repeatedly told her that Rick was a very good man. In 1995, our family was completed when she married that good man in a little white chapel in their favorite vacation spot, the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, where she and Rick owned a vacation cabin for 20 years.

Debbie loved traveling, most especially to experience the National Parks. Known as the “Glamping Queen,” -- a reference to her insistence on camping in style -- she spent the past several years traveling the nationin her fifth wheelon weekends and holidays with her husband and their many “camping buddies.” In fact, one of her friends once quipped that Debbie “put the ‘glamp’ in camping.” It was her post-retirement dream to “glamp” her way across the country with her husband and see all the national monuments.

While Debbie was an outwardly glamorous woman, she was one of those rare souls that was even more beautiful on the inside. She deeply loved all three of her children and adored her grandchildren, whose homes were her favorite destinations. Although her first husband was gone, she maintained a special relationship with his family, most especially his parents, Charles Ray and Virginia. Debbie loved bringing them along on hermany traveling adventures. She took to her second husband’s family -- including his son, whom she loved as her own -- like a fish to water. Debbie was especially close with her latesister, Lou,and ever an attentive daughter, spent endless hours caring for their elderly parents afterher eldest sister andbrother passed away.

Debbie’s life ran the gamut; from tragedy to triumph, from pain and sorrow to love and contentedness. Through it all, her presence here was marked by a deep grace and graciousness. She spent her last days making absolutely sure that those who knew and loved her were certain she loved them, wholly and unconditionally. Her loss has left an enormous hole in the lives of all she touched and we will miss her for all our remaining days.

Debbie was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray Shinholser; her mother, Patricia Eubanks; her mothers-in-law, Virginia Shinholser and Wanda Benninghoff; her father-in-law, Eugene “Benny” Benninghoff; her older sister, Lou Rymsza, and her brother, John Eubanks.

She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Rick Benninghoff; their three children, David Benninghoff (Jane), Mandy Pagano (Tony) and Michael Shinholser (Sarah); her grandchildren, Krystal Romero, Josh and Lara Pagano and Evan and Lilly Shinholser, as well as her father, John Eubanks; her brother, James Eubanks; her father-in-law, Charles Ray Shinholser and her brother-in-law, Bob Rymsza. She is also survived by her first husband’s sisters and brothers and their families, as well as her second husband’s sisters and their families.

Debbie will be laid to rest in a service beginning at the graveside at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Riverside Memorial Park,7242 Normandy Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32205, followed by a memorial and reception at 11:00 a.m. at Lakeside Church of Christ,2539 Moody Road, Orange Park, FL 32073. What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief summary of the deceased's life, information about the funeral or memorial service, and may also mention the deceased's significant contributions and survivors.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a formal acknowledgment of an individual's death, helping to notify friends, acquaintances, and the community. They also provide a historical record and are a way to celebrate and honor the life of the deceased, as well as to express grief publicly.

Who usually writes an obituary?

An obituary is often written by a close family member or friend, although some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance. In some cases, a funeral home or an obituary writing service can also craft the notice.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the full name of the deceased, age at the time of death, the city of residence, date of death, a brief overview of life and achievements, information about the funeral or memorial service, and a list of surviving family members.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is generally a shorter, factual statement of a person's death, often without the biographical details or family information found in an obituary. Death notices are usually paid for by the family and published in newspapers or online.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are published online, either on funeral home websites, online newspaper obituaries sections, or on specialized memorial sites. Online obituaries may allow for greater space, multimedia elements, and interactivity, such as posting condolences.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll need to contact the publication's obituary department for their submission guidelines and rates. Most newspapers accept obituaries from funeral homes or individuals and may have specific requirements regarding wording, length, and deadlines.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary greatly depending on the newspaper's circulation, the length of the obituary, and whether photographs are included. Online obituaries may be less expensive or even free in some cases.

How long should an obituary be?

There is no set length for an obituary, but they commonly range from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Newspaper obituaries may be subject to space limitations and associated costs, whereas online obituaries may offer more flexibility in length.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death is not necessary and is entirely at the discretion of the family. Some may choose to mention it for transparency or to support a cause related to the death, while others may prefer to keep it private.

Can I include a photo with an obituary?

Yes, photos are commonly included with obituaries, especially online, and add a personal touch. Newspapers may have specific guidelines on the type and size of the photo.

Are there different types of obituaries?

Yes, traditional obituaries are just one type. There are also brief death notices, and more extensive life tributes or memorials that focus on a person's story, personality, and impact.

What should be done if an error is found in the obituary after publication?

If there is an error in the published obituary, contact the newspaper or website as soon as possible to correct it. Most publications will be understanding and willing to make the necessary changes quickly.

Is there a standard structure to follow when writing an obituary?

While there is no strict format, obituaries typically begin with the announcement of death, followed by biographical details, information about the funeral or memorial service, and a list of surviving relatives. Many people also include a personal message or a favorite quote.

How can I personalize an obituary?

An obituary can be personalized by sharing fond memories, anecdotes, personal achievements, or unique traits of the deceased. Many families also incorporate poetry, quotes, or religious text that reflects the individual's spirit or beliefs.

How do I ensure the obituary is respectful and honors the deceased?

To ensure respect and honor, focus on the positive aspects of the person’s life, use a tone that reflects their personality, and have close family members or friends review the obituary before publication.

Should an obituary include charitable donation information?

If the family prefers charitable donations in lieu of flowers, this information can be included in the obituary along with the name of the charity and how to donate. It's a meaningful way to honor the deceased's legacy.

Can an obituary be edited after it has been published?

While print obituaries cannot be edited once published, online obituaries often allow for edits or updates. It's best to proofread carefully before submitting to minimize the need for changes.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is usually published within a week after death to ensure timely notification of the services. However, this can depend on the family's wishes and newspaper deadlines.

Can I add condolences or memories to an online obituary?

Most online obituaries and memorial websites offer the option for people to add condolences, personal messages, and memories. This allows friends and family to share in the remembrance from anywhere.

How can I find the obituary of someone who has recently passed away?

Obituaries can typically be found on the websites of local newspapers, at funeral home websites, or through online obituary and memorial databases. You may also contact the deceased's family or the funeral home directly for information.
