If you come up with big ideas that you want to explore, let those ideas guide you through the writing. It's perfectly fine to start with a character or world, but it's perfectly fine also to start with a question or theme or relationship dynamic you want to explore.

As Ezra Pound famously said of poetry, literature is news that stays news. The best stories feel timely and relevant whenever they're picked up, even when they're about some forgotten war or social struggle. The people and ideas still feel vivid. Try to aspire to that!

Writing is always a kind of roulette. Sometimes the story or poem will turn out better than you hope, sometimes worse, sometimes the same. The difference is that when you "win," you have an amazing story, whereas you're not broke if you "lose." You just have to spin again!

@T1SydneyTrains This morning I got into Sydney after commuting over 30 hours from Birmingham UK and yet Sydney trains can turn a simple Central to Parramatta trip into a worse experience than that. Fair play 👏🏻
