John Driscoll Malone Obituary - 2024 (2024)

John Driscoll Malone, of Silver Spring, MD., passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024. Beloved husband of Gerardine (Geri) Brennan and father of Reilly and Erin. He was a man of high integrity and a wonderful role model to all, but especially to his children who will always remember the lessons he taught them and who will live by his example.

John lived life fully despite an immune system that relentlessly introduced ever more complicated health challenges. In the last days of his life, an infection silently worked its way through his body undetected until it was too late. He fought until the very end, letting us know in no uncertain terms that he wanted to keep fighting, and letting us know how deeply he loved us.

Those who had the honor to know him surely knew his passion for all things barbeque. He loved the craft—continuously seeking new knowledge on the topic and experimenting with new techniques. Family and friends far and wide benefited from that passion as he loved sharing the fruits of his labor.

John was a lifelong learner. Curiosity was something that came naturally to him and he passed his curious spirit down to Reilly and Erin. The three of them regularly engaged in conversations about the various books they were reading and classes they were taking and enjoyed watching shows together on science and history. This provided the sparks that would eventually kindle in the kids a burning passion for understanding the world. Nightly conversations at the dinner table were never boring! The wide-ranging topics touched on all aspects of human experiences, and surely influenced the paths that Reilly and Erin are now pursuing in life.

He adored his family and was thrilled that his siblings and father started the tradition of meeting every week for the past several years through virtual visits. Importantly, it was through these visits he was able to connect more regularly with his brother Tom (who lived on the West Coast) before he too was taken from this earth at far too young an age.

John was raised in the northern suburbs of Chicago. He graduated from New Trier High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Depaul University and a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland. Between earning these degrees he traveled the world, played semi-professional rugby, got momentarily lost in the Alps, started a t-shirt company, met and married Geri (the love of his life), started a family, taught his kids math and how to ride bikes (and so much more), and ran a successful consulting business. He closed out his career by helping hundreds of students navigate the early phases of their own careers through his position at the University of Maryland. His life was full!

He and Geri met on Saint Patrick’s day, introduced to each other by their dear mutual friend, Sheila. They held Saint Patrick’s day as a special anniversary and held a party every year to commemorate.

They lived in Chicago for several years where they had a wonderful group of friends who remained special to John even when they did not live close. In 2009, John and his family moved to Silver Spring, MD, where they were surrounded by an amazing, welcoming, and supportive community. No one could ask for a better place to raise their children.

We have lost a wonderful man too soon. We will always cherish his memory. Anyone who had the pleasure to know and love John will miss him dearly.

In addition to Geri, Reilly, and Erin, John is survived by his father, Joseph L. Malone, Jr.; his siblings Joseph L. (Lee) Malone, III, Margaret “Peggy” Malone, Maureen Malone Kelly, Patricia Malone Aalbregtse, Kathleen Malone Leone, and Mary (Joseph) Johnson; Geri’s siblings Bridget (Walter) Kenar, John (Kerry) Brennan, Hugh (Michelle) Brennan, Joe Brennan (Shelly Winson), Katie (Tim) Paul, Winifred (Steve) Groos, and Ann Brennan; forty nieces and nephews; and nine grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Maureen McGreevy Malone, and brother, Thomas Keeshon Malone. Also special to him were his late brother-in-law, Kevin Aalbregtse and his father’s late wife, Shirley Malone.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on July 19, 2024 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at McGinty’s Public House, 911 Ellsworth Dr., Silver Spring, MD.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of John’s favorite charities in his name. Misericordia, (www.misericordia.com) which provides a continuum of care with home and work opportunities for residents with developmental disabilities, including his sister, Peggy (family #3480); the Angel Fund (https://www.theangelfund.net/) an organization dedicated to providing support to children with special needs; or Lions Camp Merrick (https://lionscampmerrick.org/about/) a camp serving the blind, deaf, and diabetes communities.
