Philadelphia to receive $110 million settlement from Walgreens in lawsuit over opioid crisis (2024)

AP

  • Aubrey Whelan - The Philadelphia Inquirer (TNS)

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia will receive $110 million over five years to settle its lawsuit against Walgreens over the national pharmacy’s role in the opioid crisis.

In its 2021 suit, the city said Walgreens had not adequately monitored suspicious orders for prescribed opioid painkillers, and had dispensed those highly addictive medications without “confirming they were issued for a legitimate medical purpose,” according to a settlement agreement released Friday afternoon.

Man United back in another FA Cup final against Man City after narrowly avoiding humiliation

  • By STEVE DOUGLAS - AP Sports Writer

Manchester United has set up another FA Cup final against fierce rival Manchester City in a way no one could ever have imagined. United blew a three-goal lead against second-tier Coventry in the semifinals and was saved by the narrowest of offside calls by VAR in stoppage time of extra time to keep the score at 3-3 before winning a penalty shootout. United advances to the May 25 title match against City. United’s celebrations after Rasmus Hojlund converted the clinching spot kick for a 4-2 win in the shootout were as much of relief as joy. Liverpool stayed alive in the Premier League title race by beating Fulham 3-1.

Israeli leaders criticize expected US sanctions against military unit that could further strain ties

  • By JOSEF FEDERMAN - Associated Press

Israeli leaders are harshly criticizing an expected decision by the U.S. to impose sanctions on a unit of ultra-Orthodox soldiers in the Israeli military. The decision, expected as soon as Monday, would mark the first time the U.S. has ever imposed sanctions on a unit inside the Israeli military. It also further strains relations between the allies that have grown grown increasingly tense during Israel’s war in Gaza. The move is especially surprising given the close ties between the two armies, which train together and share research and intelligence with one another. Israeli leaders condemned the decision as unfair, especially at a time when Israel is at war, and vowed to oppose it.

United escapes with shootout win after blowing three-goal lead against Coventry in FA Cup semifinal

  • By MATTIAS KAREN - Associated Press

Second-tier Coventry nearly pulled off one of the most unexpected comebacks in FA Cup history by rallying from three goals down against Manchester United in the semifinals only to endure another gut-wrenching penalty shootout loss at Wembley. Rasmus Hojlund scored the decisive penalty to save United from another embarrassing collapse after Callum O’Hare and Ben Sheaf had missed their spot kicks for Coventry. It was another heartbreaking ending at Wembley for Coventry, which also lost on penalties to Luton in last year’s Championship playoff final to miss out on promotion to the Premier League. United’s narrow escape sets up another Manchester derby in the final against Manchester City, which beat Chelsea on Saturday.

  • By JAKE COYLE - AP Film Writer

“Civil War,” Alex Garland’s ominous American dystopia, remained the top film in theaters in its second week of release. That's according to studio estimates Sunday. The A24 election-year gamble, the indie studio’s biggest budgeted film yet, took in $11.1 million in ticket sales at 3,929 theaters over the weekend. It came in second with $10.2 million in 3,384 theaters. Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” also struggled to make a mark with moviegoers. It debuted with $9 million in 2,845 theaters.
