Ryobi is owned by Techtronic Industries, a Hong Kong-based multinational engineering and technology company. Founded in 1985, Techtronic has evolved into one of the world's leading power equipment companies, owning several brands such as Milwaukee and Ryobi.

Milwaukee Tool was last sold in 2005 for $626.6 million to the Hong Kong-based Techtronic Industries, also known as TTI Group. The company is now a subsidiary of TTI Group alongside brands like AEG, Ryobi, Hoover, Dirt Devil, and Vax.

Note: Most of Ryobi's cordless tools are rated 18V, whereas DeWalt's are 20V. Although this suggests the latter are more powerful, the two companies use alternate ways of describing their battery output. In practice, both deliver very similar performance.

Kyocera Corp. announced in a news release Thursday its purchase of Japan-based Ryobi Limited's power tool business. The acquisition is expected to be completed in January 2018.

Milwaukee tools are known for their power. The company's tools are designed to deliver high performance, even in the most demanding applications. Ryobi tools, on the other hand, are designed for less demanding applications. While they can still get the job done, they may not be as powerful as Milwaukee tools.

Lowes does not carry any Ryobi tools in stores because the brand has a contract with Home Depot, one of its chief competitors, to sell products exclusively at its stores. This isn't uncommon; the two retailers have lost brands to each other in the past.

Like Bauer and Warrior tools, Hercules is another Harbor Freight brand that could be a solid Ryobi substitute. The tool maker provides an extensive selection of products, and some of the best Hercules power tools include saws, impact drivers, and jackhammers.

Ryobi is a TTI brand – for the sake of this conversation – that is exclusive to Home Depot. Ryobi primarily offers power tools and equipment, as well as accessories, storage products, and they have been dabbling more in hand tools. Kobalt is a Lowe's tool brand.

Milwaukee and Ryobi and dozens of other companies are all owned by TTI, just like Stanley Black and Decker own craftsman and Dewalt. They're still manufactured separately.
